My life here in the Dominican has been far better than great. One of my biggest fears was not being able to adapt or relate to the culture. I was raised in poverty and often had the misconception that I wouldnt be anything in life because I couldn't see past the 4 walls of the ghetto I was trapped in. I never imagined leaving the country, going to collge, or being happy it was just one of those things that appeared far away. my life changed in high school when I began filling out college applications, I started to see a way out.
Traveling to the homes in The Dominican saddened me at first because I felt like I was visiting homes of people who were trapped; I thought they were unhappy, and I couldn't do anything to help them. After, spending time in their homes and getting to know them I realize they are the happiest people I have ever met in my life. They appear poor but they are rich with kindness. they have so little but they give so much. They cooked feast size meals for us and begged us to eat as much as we could. ..... They are the type of people I envy.
