I've been busy soaking up the Dominican culture and a little of the sun, but I'm back to share just a little of my experiences from the past 4 days!
I now feel like an official member of the 3 MM family; material making is well underway and we've started to interact with the children even more. All of my previous Montesorri experience comes from simply observing so I was slightly hesistent about taking a more hands on role in the classroom. Suprisingly it went much better than expected, students responded well to my reading and the songs we introduced, especially those with a lot of movement. Some of my peers and I also began constructing the outdoor sound area. A place students can explore the sounds of: baking pans, tin cans, bottles, tamborines and much more! I'm anxious to put the final peices together and show the children how each instrument works.
The week ended with a tour of the Mariposas Foundation for girls, a road trip to Playa Grande and Zip-lining in the Monkey Jungle. The foundation is striving to promote literacy, teach vocational skills and foster interests of young women in hopes that tbey will be able to provide sustainable living for themselves and/or families as they grow older. Learning about the multiple non-profit organizations and their missions within this country have definitely fueled the fire already burning within me to make an impact on the world. I am seriously considering looking into more organizations determined to help those in need in this country and coming back to chip in. I have always believed that by touching one life you can touch the lives of many; a belief I want to put into action and the legacy I want to create.
As for doing as the Romans, I have enjoyed some great music, food and dancing this weekend. Apart of me feels that the community has already given me more than I have given it and I just hope I can show my gratitude somehow!
Until next time,
