If I could summarize my day in one word I would choose, humbling. I had the opportunity to soak in the difference in socioeconomic status but I could also see and take part in the joys of simple living. It honestly felt really good to enjoy conversation without constantly being bothered by notifications and calls etc.
From what I've seen the people here may not have a lot but what they have is cherished and willingly shared. Seeing the community in action also gave me the chance to see the similarities shared amongst communities around the world. I saw families walking with groceries, men and women waiting for the bus and the elderly trying to stay cool in the shade. Caberete is truly a beautiful place, and day one already has me excited for what's to come!
"We all live with the objective of being happy, our lives are all different and yet the same"
On top of getting a chance to see everyday life, I also got to hang by the beach! The night ended with an awesome meal from Casa Mimi's a traditional Dominican restaurant. I tried two new things: melon juice and tostones (unsweetned plantains, much like french fries) YUM! I can't wait to see what tomorrow holds and I'll be sure to share so check back soon!
