On my first day I observed el Nido or the nest which is the younger group of children at the school. These children range from 1-3 years old. While observing I saw them engaged in circle time. I was impressed with how they all sat still and were engaged for the whole time. I also think that it is great that the staff sings songs in both English and Spanish because personally I remember information a lot better when it is delivered through a song. When it came time for them to do their independent work the children knew exactly what to do. This is something that I love about the Montessori method. It gives the children a sense of responsibility. I really think that the Montessori method shows that most people do more for their children than they really need to be doing; underestimating their abilities.
On my second day I observed in the primary room. The children in this room are 3-6 years old. These children also displayed an excellent sense of self control, respect, and responsibility. I believe that being engaged in the Montessori method has helped them develop these characteristics. I loved seeing the children involved in the practical life skills They were involved by helping prepare the food and setting the table. I like this because these are things that they are going to have to know how to do and are capable of doing so why not have them involved in these types of activities. One moment that I won't forget is when one of the boys in the primary room came up to me and showed me a book. He then opened the book and began to kiss the different characters on the page; it was adorable. I can't wait to interact with the children next week.
