Yesterday was our last day at Tres Mariposas Montessori School. It was also our last time having lunch with our host families. I was quite sad having to say goodbye to all of the children at the school and my host family. I have created many incredible bonds with the Guides at 3MM as well as with the children in my host family. Although it was sad to say goodbye to everybody, I must remember that even if I was at the school for a short period of time, I definitely impacted the lives of these young children in a positive way! I am excited for the day that I am able to come back and visit and to be able to see all of the children who I spent time with to be graduated from 3MM and to be able to see where they’re headed in their young lives!
One particular memory and moment that I will not forget is when I was trying to teach a young child at 3MM how to catch and throw a baseball. It may seem so simple, but these children find entertainment and enjoyment in just the smallest of activities. Each day this same boy would come up to me with two gloves and a ball and ask me to play catch with him. I would always say yes and help this child with skills that have to do with baseball such as learning how to position his glove in order to catch the baseball. Each day this child would slightly improve his skills.—this made me happy knowing that I could impact this child and guide him in developing his interest in this sport.
After we sang our songs for the last time with the 3MM school and had our farewell ceremony, we headed off on our last walk to our host family. This was a very tough goodbye due to the fact that we were able to get to know the children in our family on a more personal level. We learned many things about these children and what interested them. Since it was the last day, I brought small gifts for the children as a way of saying thank you. I wanted to thank them for allowing us to come into their home and share a meal with them every day. I got the children temporary tattoos and glow sticks. When I gave the children these small gifts, they were very excited and quickly asked me to help them apply the tattoos. I will never forget how their eyes lit up when given such a small gift.—it was truly fulfilling knowing that I could have another person feel this way. Our last lunch was filled with laughter and I think that my Spanish communication improved from the first time at the host family’s house.
Yesterday was a bittersweet day. I will never forget the amazing staff of 3MM due to the fact that they were very welcoming all throughout our experience at the school. They always made me feel like I was helping out and impacting the children in one way or another which made me feel super important. I will never forget these children who I have met and I will be back one day to see all of these beautiful faces again!
