Today was quite an eye-opener for me. After our observing period at the school, we took a tour of the town that many of the students who attend Tres Mariposa Montessori School live. This small town is called, La Cienega. "La Cienega" translates to the word, "swamp" in English. The reason that this town is called this is because many years ago this town was slowly built over a swamp area of land. La Cienega is a poverty stricken town although it became apparent that materials did not matter to the natives of La Cienega.
As we were guided through the narrow, dirt roads of this town I saw nothing but smiles on both the children and adults' faces. I exchanged many, "Holas" and "Bonjours" with both the Dominicans and the Haitians who have settled in this town. It is super refreshing to see a town where things are simplistic. This experience has opened my eyes to seeing what is truly important in life and to not get caught up in the materials of life, but who you surround yourself with!
It is exciting to know that I will be able to personally get to know a family who lives in this community! I am looking forward trying their food and seeing how they cook! I have many questions for the family that I will be having lunch with for the week next week! This is where my Spanish Lessons will definitely come in handy!
