Yesterday was our last day with the children of Tres Mariposas, and our final family lunch. The last circle time was both heart-wrenching and immensely satisfying. We sang each of our songs, as well as an additional farewell song for the children. During our final recess, I thought to myself, "I can only hope that these children learned as much from us as we learned from them." Watching the children in action, so independent and confident and capable and hopeful despite their circumstances, was awe-inspiring. Even though the children I worked with in Honduras were poor, they were all paying to attend a private bilingual school, whereas most of the 3MM children attend only because of scholarships. Working with these children was an incredible experience.
After school, we headed to La Cienega for the final time. I will be ever grateful to our host mother, Margery, who nursed me when I was sick, told me stories of her life, and made me feel special and appreciated. It is amazing how generous people with so very little can be.
Although this is not related to our trip, I also found out yesterday that my article has been accepted for publication (without revisions!) in the next issue of PDS Partners magazine. This was a great surprise for our final full day.
After lunch, Katelyn and I headed into town for the final time. We custom-ordered higuera candle shades (carved from higuera plants, which look similar to coconuts but are not edible) with tres mariposas for the Mirabal sisters, not only a perfect remembrance of our time, but also an ode to the history of this beautiful country.
Our final group dinner and farewells was very sad. We have met so many incredible people on this trip. I hope someday to return and see them all again. However, there are so many places to visit in the world first! I can't wait for the next chapter in my life!
