There is so much that I have learned on this trip that I don’t think I would learn anywhere else in my life.
Because I am in the classroom often, I see an adequate amount of events happening. I see how the students work independently, how the teachers help assist the students, and how the students interact with one another.
Watching the teachers and staff working at the school as well as being in both Primary and El Nido, I have learned so much from being here a shy 3 weeks. Yes, plenty of what you learn in school is academic. However, for this staff its not just “classroom work”. Its learning to cooperate with their peers, being amazing examples for these children to follow, teaching them to care about themselves, love themselves for who they are, care about them and their well being, and teach them things that no one in the world can teach.
Every time I set my eyes on the staff, the biggest smiles are presented from their faces, as well as the children. The students and staff here have such a special bond, and it’s truly amazing to see this going on from both sides of the spectrum.
I want to one day be a teacher like each of the staff members at 3 Mariposas Montessori. To be an exceptional person in each of their lives. To someway touch these students hearts. Much like the teachers and students did mine.
I can’t explain how grateful I am to be given this opportunity as not only a future educator, but just a 20 year old women. I think its important to see not only different parts of the world, but to see how these people are different than I am, and what I can learn from this experience for the future. From going to the school, to the family homes, to interacting with the children, I am given such an amazing opportunity to meet so many amazing people who made my life better. They have impacted me in such a way I can’t thank enough for.
The winding down of the trip is truly making me sad. Not seeing the staff everyday. Or the children. Or my beautiful host family. I just want to be in this amazing place more and more each second I am here.
But then I thought of something.
I am here for a reason. To become a better teacher. A better person. To experience a part of a world and a culture that I am not familiar with. What would I be doing not continuing this journey elsewhere? Continuing this legacy that this country and family taught me?
I am dreading my goodbyes, and packing. However, I know that one day I’m going to be back and see these students soar, as well as the school, community and staff.
I am so looking forward to that day.
