I believe that I started to miss the Dominican and it's people the second we landed in JFK. Listening to people yelling about unnecessary things and no more Hola! I noticed that when I got off the plain I had a little difficulty switching back over to English, walking through the airport saying Hola! and talking to the hostess on the airplane in Spanish when asking for my snacks. The people that we met on the trip were all so incredible it was hard not to miss them.
The cold was the hardest thing to adjust to when I got back from the Dominican! SNOW YUCK!!
Since returning I find myself to be very different. I am not so quick to judge people and I am much more grateful for all that I have. Family members have also mentioned to me that they loved reading my blogs and they were able to see the growth that I made. After being constantly surrounded by people who are so grateful for all they have and always having such an upbeat attitude, you can't help but bring some of that back. I think that this experience will help me tremendously on my journey to becoming the best teacher I can possibly be. Not only will it be a little easier to communicate with people who speak Spanish in public schools. Also I think that this experience has given me a more open mind toward situations that children and their families may be going through.
I love telling people about all the experiences that I have had! I carry the pictures around with me in my purse because sometimes when I feel a little down due to the weather or the stress of life, it's nice to look back and remember the life changing experiences I was able to have.
I have no doubt in my mind that I will return to the beautiful Dominican and my second family that was created there. I miss all the people that I had the privilege of meeting down there, especially the cute kids! I can't wait to go back and see all of the growth that the school and children have made.
I'll see you soon Cabarete!
